Often, I find myself wishing I’d just studied wizardry, like the family wanted. Not just now, as I find myself lost, somehow, in these tunnels, shark-bitten and wet, but while reading the passive-aggressive letters from Dad, and being expected to either be nothing more than some background music, or to singlehandedly (pun extremely intended) save the day. I know I’ll have my moment, but I’m just not sure that moment is now. Bards know magic a little too well, almost, taking so long to study a spell and learn to truly understand it that we find ourselves both limited, and extraordinarily versatile. Some time ago, I took up clerical necromancy, the kindest form of the dark arts, and I learned things in my study that I wish I hadn’t. Things that my sheltered life of music and books hadn’t had me thinking about before. I do fear death, greatly, but I hadn’t thought about it much before. At the moment, I’m arguably quite close to it, and I’m trying to understand why I don’t like to feel like this. I once had a teacher say that every feeling is wonderful, in some amount, and I have to admit, he was certainly right. With the adrenaline racing through me and a sword in my hand, this felt great, for a moment. A challenge, something thrilling. But now? I’m just tired, and hurt, and cold. I’ve spent so much of my life trying to understand things, the rocks and the trees and why the sky shifts how it does, but now I’ve come here, to this valley, where nothing makes sense. Narcelia’s fine enough, arguably the best adjusted of the party, and an extremely capable warrior. It’s everyone else that’s got me stumped. The other paladin goes from protective to threatening to kill an innocent animal in a matter of minutes, only to make a beeline for the tavern once we set foot into town. Cough is a “doctor” with no knowledge of medicine outside of what you’d see coming from snake oil salesman, yet sometimes, somehow, when he sets his mind to it, the bird’s cures work, and quite well. The Halfling refuses to get down from the ceiling, I don’t find a need to elaborate on that, and her otherwise greedy nature is perfectly understandable. Meanwhile, there’s Olens, a spellcaster who hasn’t yet realized that the only reason anyone wears a mask is because there’s something odd with their face, only drawing attention to the fact. He’s either disfigured, marked, or otherwise hiding something. I don’t trust him. Gizlan’s about as strange as wizards get, but isn’t necessarily an outlier. I quite like his owl. Another person I can understand, if only in understanding why I can’t understand him. I can’t leave our ranger out of the matter, either. She’s an extremely capable archer, but it’s almost as if she gave up some part of herself to do it. She’s an empty person, seeming to know little more than a harsh, letter of the law, interpretation of justice (except for when it suits her especially well to look the other way). Quite frankly, I’m not even sure why she’s on this mission with us, she seems to have things settled by herself. I want to make peace with her, even so. She can be a nightmare to deal with, yet I can’t help but admire her. This is a person that doesn’t flinch at anything you throw at her. Last, but certainly not least, is Bigsy. His life is dedicated to dealing with death, and he uses the mere concept of it as a weapon with disturbing effectiveness. Thoughts are powerful, I should know, I once hurt a man’s feelings so bad he died, but how does one get so comfortable with death while remaining as cheerful as he does? It’s not an act, or if it is, it’s a very good one. Bigsy finds joy in his knowledge and work. I’ve got to find out how he does it.
To conclude, though, I can’t understand why I fear death, perhaps for similar reasons to why I can’t understand why I value my own life. It might be something so key in society or life, such a base part of ourselves, that it’s impossible to understand, like when you try to think about not existing, and the chaotic ideas about trying to feel nothing that bounce back at you are all the answer you need. The issue isn’t so much that we don’t understand as it is that we can’t understand, and understanding that we can’t understand is answer enough.
I’m a bard, though, not a philosopher. I’m not even a very good bard. Either way, though, I have a song to write, about how I dueled a shark and won, and the mess I found myself in afterwords.

Red-faced Gizlan;
I am so embarrassed.. My mental and physical exhaustion from staying awake all night studying new
spell theories sent me by Brother Bart and being separated from Moonshadow so long has made me a
mockery. Imagine setting your own feet on fire! I hope Shardanzar never hears of it. Anyway as I get
closer to my familiar and finally slept, I hope to redeem my self and reputation.
A mad wizard may tip the world.......The thread is starting to vibrate and hum........

Things I did not expect to kill today: a hag. Things I did not expect to meet down here: a monk who wishes to let a hag live. Things I did not want to find on our return: Riverguard destroyed by Orthanc deviltry. Things I clearly need to start carrying: enough powdered silver to poison a green dragon.
(If a spot doesn't open up, can Olens spend next session gathering the slain, performing rites, and casting Ceremony? ... and sending a hireling out for some powdered silver for the components to said spell, will deduct a black crystal and 25 gp for three casting's worth.)

That place gets weiarder and weiarder the longer we are down there.
Astonishingly a keep this krew had cleared seems to have been overrun by the undead! Sweet! Finally a clerics time to shine. A true cleric.. *cough*... Anyway oh I almost forgot to write down, the bahd got a bone sword with dragon sensing jewels. I know what y'all thinkn, and it confuses me too.. oh well. Time to go swinging at some undead for a bit!

Gizlan's thoughts, The air cultists have killed all those innocents in Rivergard including my faithful man servant Julute. I call that rather rude and they shall be dealt with. Loyal Julute delivered the herbs and incense, bless him, may he rest in peace. Now I shall call my owl partner back from the Fey dimension. I can't wait for him to meet my new "little friends" from their own dimension. With the addition of Moonshadow as flight leader, Yarl, Rex, Flar and Boody the Magma Mephits will form the Magical Interdimensional Air Force. Me thinks the air cultists may just be in for a surprise.
I am glad that Brother Bartholamew sent the phonetic translations from Terran to dwarvish.

It is a sad day indeed. I didn't know riverguard and i did not know its people and now that the city is dead i will never know the sounds of this city. There voices forever lost to time. I found a magic sword and gave it to my friend Valen, i hope it serves him well against the dragon that sleeps in the cursed temple. I like the hafling monk, he brings a kindness and mercy that has been missing in the group and stands up for his morals unlike me. Perhaps i can learn some courage from him. I wish to help bury the dead with Olens, maybe find some herbs and healing supplies from the local doctor. In life he may have been a doctor that surpasses me but with him joining the dead it falls upon me to continue the practice of perserving life. I may only be a doctor but i feel reminded of the tragedy of the plague on my home and i wish to help. It chills me to my core. -Good doctor cough

Gizlan's thoughts.
Hah; I wonder how the Nasty Elementals like fighting against nasty elementals.. I am having a lot of trouble with the huge variety of enemies in this realm. Things were so much simpler with much fewer abberations back in Minaria. This is truly a place of nightmares. Critters launching out of ground below our feet! And I thought Oggsbog the ogre was frightening! Oh well. My best friend and I are reunited once again and have some catching up to do. Moonshaqdow thought to me that he thinks Yarl and Flar are nicer than Rex but doesn't know what to think about Boody. Onward.....

~~~Gizlan's thoughts~~~
(Try again)
The Grand Council of Wizard's that exiled me to this Hell hole Must have been REALLY upset with me. They obviously sent me here to die. The nightmarish giant insects alone are enough to terrify anyone. The giant worm skeleton was unnerving. The horrible clawed beast that came up out of the rubble scared me so bad I became frozen in terror. If not for Moonshadow's presence I probably would have been eaten. Even setting it on fire only seem to irritate it.. The group I find myself with has varied motives. Some wish to further their religious ideals. Some hope to save their lands from this great evil. Some act out of hatred and vengeance and some seem to be only interested in loot. My own motives I question. I crave justice for the murders of Avalon Bill and Julute W. by the hands of the cultists and would also love to survive this place if only to spite the council.
Ok...What in the name of Urmoff is that thing on the throne !!!!!......
~~Gizlan's thoughts~~
Well I'll be a Zornish goblin's butt! THAT was certainly awkward. We are indeed a clumsy lot. I feel like a street performing juggler. Now I ask, how many adventurers can YOU keep floating at once?? On a different note it seems coming up with an actual plan with these folks is a fruitless endeavor. From now on I am but a passenger on this particular strand of the weave. May the Gods help me.... I grow nauseous and totally drained of Manae. If we are about to confront the top dog hellspawn soon we all may be soon heading for the next incarnation. At least I die a happier mage knowing there are now 9 fewer vicious cultists left. !
