From the Shell... The Journal of Xelbuk....
This land is an unholy mess... IN my sixteen summers, I have never seen such a place... It is a land blighted by an evil... ...and evil that is known and spoken of in hushed tones... The devil Strahd must fall to restore this land to its roots... I suppose as I am here, some of that will fall upon me... It is more than this young Tortle expected to be dealing with... BUt, if nothing else, perhaps the adventure will prove a worthy and exciting one... The place is so awful, I find myself in other forms rather than mine own more often than not... I suppose it is meant to be,...
By my shell, I can't wait to get home to the beautiful grasslands of Faerun...

In case anyone finds this:
I can't say it enough. I hate this place. I hate wolves, bats, phantoms, and everyone who has any semblance of power within this realm. What I can't decide is which type of person in Barovia I hate more. The ones that never smile, like myself, or the ones that can, because I can't.
The fight within me grows, though. I start to discern my purpose here. There are injustices here, as anywhere. Tyrants, murderers, thieves. Reasons for vengeance. I can't pretend that carrying out justice here serves my personal cause, but it does serve a worthy cause. The Morning Lord must return. Strahd must perish. When these two situations become reality, many things within Barovia will be set right. If I die in this cause, my only regret will be not getting vengeance on my true nemesis. If I survive this place, I'll use what I learned here to vanquish my foe. In this way, things are made simple.
I've made too many promises in this land. A promise to children that they will be safe. A promise to a dead man that he will be redeemed. A promise to a stranger that she will have my loyalty.
It's time to remember the only promise that matters. Vengeance. If my enemies do not fear my sword, then at the very least they should fear my hate.
