3 days after your arrival in town a young child knocks on the door to Harriet's home. She looks about furtively and slides a sealed note under the door before running off.
Heroes of Cauldron,
Please, I, no the city, has need of your help. Foul works abound in our fair city. The Temple of Wee Jas is a festering boil upon our city. They seek to drive the light of Pelor from our streets. I fear for our dear Lord Mayor, he went missing so long ago, I doubt there is much hope for his survival. I know you are back in the city, the Legendary Grogrot was seen in the streets by one of the guards still loyal to the city. I have kept news of your return from those loyal to Wee Jas, in the hopes that their High Priestess will remain unaware of your return. Thank the gods you are back. When the mayor vanished I was appointed acting Lord Mayor, but is for show only, they pull all the strings, they replaced the guards that would not follow their rule with more malleable persons. They arranged for the invasion of Red Gorge and the stranglehold that now strangles the joy from our city. They knew I was liked, they knew the citizens would trust my word and not question the path I suggested. I did it, I told them to give up their freedoms, I told them it would be alright, that it would be for only a short time while order was restored. I had to, they have the children, they swore I would find them all flayed if I refused. What choice did I have? They broke the spirits of the Stormblades, you brave heroes, we thought were lost. I am ashamed to say that they broke me, their cruelty, their manipulations, all these things I was to afraid to rise against. I failed our city, I know that now. I thought it was for the best, save the many by giving them the things they wanted. I was so very wrong.
I need to meet with you. I know you have no reason to trust me, but I must still ask and hope that your love of this city and faith in yourselves is enough for you to take a chance on me. I have included a schedule of the patrols about the city. There are a few guards who are still loyal to the city. I can't risk this note being found and endangering them by including their names. When we meet I can tell you who I believe can be trusted.
Please, I beg of you come to the Lord Mayors office. The route should be safest this evening, avoid the area by the Temple of Wee Jas by all means if you can, the temple has eyes, far more then just its occupants.
Your humble servant,
Vhalantru
